AVOID COMPLACENCE
I had a teacher who taught me in primary two, in 1962. By that time he was the Headmaster of my school in the village, and being the most educated around he was much respected.
He would beat and discipline us in class, and send us on manual errands. We all looked to him as the ultimate example of success.
Fourteen years after, I had just graduated from Wesley Teachers College in Ibadan as the best Grade II certificate student of the year.
I was good in mathematics, so the government of the state employed me to teach mathematics to a class of some elderly teachers who were yet to have qualifying certificate for the profession. I got to class to teach mathematics, and I saw my old time teacher of 1962 amongst my students.
Out of embarrassment I tried to dodge him, but he found me out.
"Francis, Francis" he said, "I am happy for you. But I didn't understand a thing out of what you were saying. Can you please explain it to me." I did.
When I left him, it was with a determination not to stay at one level of success for too long, otherwise the first will become the last, and the last the first.
Do not allow complacency to relegate you to the back and rob you of your place of prominence.
What is best today will not necessarily be best tomorrow, therefore "go forward." (Exodus 14:15)
