Breaking News: President Tinubu Approves N70,000 Minimum Wage
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria has approved a new national minimum wage of N70,000 for Nigerian workers and committed to reviewing the national minimum wage law every three years. This decision follows significant agitation from the labour unions, particularly the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who have long demanded an increase in wages to reflect the rising cost of living and inflation.
During a meeting held on Thursday July 18, 2024, in Abuja with leaders of the TUC and NLC, President Tinubu announced the approval and also promised to find ways to assist the private sector and sub-national governments in paying the new minimum wage. The labour unions, which have been advocating for this increment through protests and negotiations, welcomed the government's decision as a positive step towards improving the welfare of Nigerian workers.
