“Sometimes we can make our own opportunities, sometimes we can see them coming, but more often than not, they are like pop quizzes, they sprung on you like a challenge to test your skills, almost like a dare to see if you can take that leap of faith to make whatever it is a success. Wait too long and an excellent opportunity might slip away.” –E. A. Bucchianeri

Challenge is always a make or mar opportunity to us, depending on how we respond to it. If I may ask, what are exams to students if not the challenge that present them the opportunity to progress or be elevated to the next class? There is no doubt that the students that pass exams are always joyful while those that fail will feel just the opposite, yes just like the students, challenges are opportunities to hand us sense of joy and fulfillment, so all we should do is to aspire to overcome them rather than giving up and fail.

A man was once fired at his place of work. With the wife and children to cater for at home, everything looked gloomy. Rather than giving in to negative thoughts, reactions and depression, he had a discussion with his wife, they made some adjustments to their living in order to cut cost, he then went to learn doughnut making.

About two months after, he returned and went into doughnut production, supplying same to stores around the town, he kept expanding gradually. His sack moved him from a sacked employee to an employer of people. This is one example of how challenge can become a stepping stone.

A mate once rushed to my room one afternoon while we were in the final year in school, the school authority withdrew him because of poor academic performance, so he visited to thank me for some past counsel before he would use suicide to solve the current problem. I was able to convince him to stay positive, then, we both analyzed the problem together and found the opportunity in it, today, he is gracious to God for that problem.

There was this pretty young lady that was visiting where I worked some years back, she was very good natured, full of smiles and soft spoken; about six guys among us were interested in dating her then, and I definitely would recommend her to any responsible guy because to me, she was a gem.

Just one Monday morning few months after, a guy from my place of work called me to ask for her full name and when I told him, he shouted and informed me that she had committed suicide because she was jilted by a guy. The one million question that came to my mind was what could have made such a lady to consider suicide while she had the opportunity of many men to pick a husband from? It is simply because she had focused her mind on the problem rather than the likely positive sides of it. This readily brings to mind the Alexander Graham Bell’s quote that says “When one door closes, another one opens, but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.” Helen Keller too at a time expressed similar statement.

What is your own challenge? Many are complaining about academic failures, lack or loss of jobs, lack of marriage mates, childlessness, health problems, financial difficulty, disability and others, but these are the challenges that people like Helen Keller, Eko Yuli Irawan, Obafemi Awolowo, Stephen Hawking, Ralph Braun, Lai Chi-Wai, Azariah Tan, former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Stevie Wonder, M.K.O, Abiola, Isko Moreno, Abraham Lincoln, Henry Ford, Chiau Haw Choon, Donald Trump, Larry King, Ulysses S Grant, Wayne Newton, George Foreman, Hana Alfikih, Milton Hershey, Noor Mastura and others had triumphed over and got celebrated by the world.

Just like Isaac Newton’s third law of motion, which states that: “For every action, there is always an equal and opposite reaction.”

To every challenge, there is an embedded opportunity for success but many had given up or done suicide because they focused on the negative developments rather than use their eyes of faith to see the opportunities embedded in their challenges.

As rightly captured by E. A. Bucchianeri in his quote that I used at the opening of this write up, opportunities sprung on us like challenges to test our skills, and almost like a dare to see if we can take that leap of faith to make success of them.

Everything written above is about personal challenges of individuals, what about societal challenges? They are also the opportunities for some individuals with the discerning minds to identify the solutions, give their all to achieve it and then offer same to the society to get fulfilled and be celebrated. Many of such people are still being celebrated till today, decades or centuries after those feats had been performed, because they braced up to what their contemporaries had avoided!

Know it that challenges exist for whatever situation simply to present us the opportunities to succeed.

Yes, overwhelming challenges will happen to all of us, all we need to do ahead is to be ready to have positive minds and also identify the people that can guide us to positively handle the storm and stay close to them when the need arises, not those that will fill us with negativity.

May we all get the right mind and right help at the right time.
